CRYPTO PAYMENT GUIDE

From Kraken to your own wallet

Buy USDC on Solana, Ethereum or USDC on Ethereum and pay with it later

Updated: August 20, 2026

Important: This guide explains the technical process only. Ethereum can fall sharply in value. USDC is intended to track the US dollar, but it is not a euro. Only use money whose loss you can afford. 1 2 10

You do not need to buy all three. Choose one option. The process is always the same:

Create a Kraken account → deposit euros → buy a coin → send it to your own wallet → pay a merchant that accepts that exact coin on the correct network.

OUR PAYMENT PREFERENCE

USDC variants are preferred over ETH.

For payments at Monotides, we prefer USDC on Solana or—if it is explicitly listed at checkout—USDC on Ethereum / ERC-20. Please use ETH only when checkout explicitly accepts ETH on the stated network.

The payment instruction at checkout is always decisive: the coin and network must match exactly. Never send USDC over a network other than the one stated there.

1. Choose what you want to buy

USDC on SolanaUSDCA wallet that supports USDC on Solana. For later payments, you also need a little SOL for the Solana network fee. 4 11
EthereumEthereum (ETH)A wallet that supports ETH on Ethereum.

Important: USDC can exist on different networks

On Kraken, you simply buy USDC. You choose the network only when you send USDC from Kraken to your own wallet.

USDC on Solana and USDC on Ethereum are not interchangeable. Kraken and your wallet must always show the same network. Choosing the wrong network can result in a loss. 4 5

2. What you need for Kraken

You needWhy?
Email address and phoneFor your account and security codes.
Identity card, passport or driving licenceKraken needs to verify your identity. 8
A bank account or card in your nameSo you can deposit euros or buy directly.
A small starting amountSo you can practise the process calmly first.
Your own walletOnly needed once you want to hold your coins yourself and pay with them later.

3. Sign up for Kraken and secure your account

  1. Only open the official website, kraken.com. Save it as a bookmark.
  2. Click “Sign up” and enter your email address and country of residence.
  3. Confirm your email address.
  4. Complete identity verification. Upload the requested identity document. Kraken may also request proof of address. 8
  5. Create a long password that you use only for Kraken.
  6. Enable two-factor authentication, ideally with a passkey. 7
Never share your password, security code or recovery phrase. Kraken Support will not ask for them and will never ask you to install remote-access software. 7

4. Deposit euros

Sign in to Kraken and open “Deposit”. Select EUR and then a payment method.

For many people in Germany, a SEPA bank transfer is straightforward. Kraken states that some SEPA and SEPA Instant options allow a free deposit from €1. Depending on your bank, the funds may arrive instantly or within up to three business days. 6

You can also buy with a supported card. The card must be in your name and support 3D Secure. The minimum purchase amount in EUR is €10. 6 9

5. Buy your coin

For beginners, Kraken’s “Buy Crypto” feature is the simplest route.

  1. Click “Buy Crypto”.
  2. Search for ETH or USDC.
  3. Check the ticker once more.
  4. Enter how many euros you want to spend.
  5. Read the preview carefully.
  6. Only then confirm the purchase.

EthereumETH€10ETH, euro amount, received ETH amount, and fee. 1
USDC on EthereumUSDC€10USDC, euro amount, received USDC amount, and fee. I choose the network only when withdrawing. 2

For direct purchases through “Buy Crypto”, Kraken currently states a 1% trading fee. A spread may also apply, meaning the displayed price can differ slightly from the market price. The exact amount is always shown before the final click. 9

If you later want to send USDC on Solana, buy or keep a small amount of SOL. If you want to send USDC on Ethereum, buy or keep a small amount of ETH. These coins pay the respective network fees. 11 12

6. Set up your own wallet

You do not need a wallet for the purchase itself. You only need one when you want to withdraw coins from Kraken and manage them yourself.

Choose a wallet that supports your exact asset and network. Download it only from the official website or official app-store link. When setting it up, you will usually receive a recovery phrase. Write it down on paper and keep it in a secure place.

USDC on SolanaUSDC on SolanaA little SOL for transaction fees.
ETHEthereum / ETHETH for the network fee.
USDC on EthereumUSDC on Ethereum or USDC (ERC-20)A little ETH for fees.
Do not photograph your recovery phrase, store it in cloud storage or share it with anyone. If you lose it, access to a self-custody wallet can be lost permanently. 10

7. Send coins from Kraken to your wallet

With a new wallet, always make a small test transfer first. A confirmed blockchain transaction cannot simply be reversed. 13

In your wallet

  1. Open the wallet.
  2. Click “Receive”.
  3. Select your asset: ETH or USDC.
  4. For USDC, choose the correct network: Solana or Ethereum / ERC-20.
  5. Copy the address or use the QR code.

At Kraken

  1. Open “Portfolio” and then “Withdraw”.
  2. Select ETH or USDC.
  3. Paste the receiving address from your wallet.
  4. Select the correct network.
  5. Check the address, network, amount and displayed fee.
  6. Send a small test amount first.

ETHEthereum / ETHThe network displayed in your wallet must match.
USDC on EthereumUSDC → Ethereum (ERC-20)Your wallet must also show USDC on Ethereum / ERC-20. 4 5

Kraken explains that when withdrawing, you must always select the same network as in the receiving wallet. Selecting the wrong network can result in a permanent loss. 13

8. Pay with your wallet

You can pay directly only when a shop or person accepts your exact coin on the correct network. The merchant will normally show the coin, network, and a payment address or QR code.

  1. First check: does the merchant accept USDC on Solana, ETH or USDC on Ethereum?
  2. Open your wallet and select “Send”.
  3. Scan the merchant’s QR code or copy the address. Do not type an address by hand.
  4. Enter the amount.
  5. Check the coin, network, address, amount and fee once more.
  6. Only then confirm the payment.
If you want to pay with …When paying, note
USDC on SolanaThe merchant must accept USDC on Solana. Your wallet must contain a little SOL for the network fee. 11
ETHThe merchant must accept ETH on the appropriate network. The transaction incurs an ETH network fee. 12
USDC on EthereumThe merchant must accept USDC on Ethereum / ERC-20. Your wallet must contain a little ETH for the network fee. 4 12
Pause before paying: blockchain payments are usually final. Check everything twice because a confirmed payment cannot simply be cancelled. 14
